Other Volunteer Opportunities
Advocates usually work with children who are new to the system and are often in crisis. As a volunteer, you will be assigned to advocate for a child or a group of siblings with whom you will have contact at least once a month. This volunteer position involves writing detailed court reports and appearing at court hearings. CASAs:
- investigate and make recommendations about the permanent placement of a child (or sibling group);
- follow the children’s progress through various placements;
- facilitate communication with all parties involved with a case;
- and make a commitment of 18 months, to see a case through to its completion.
Monitors work with children who are in long-term foster care. Volunteers usually work with teens and help prepare them for adulthood by focusing on education and job training. Volunteers have contact with the children at least once each month and write brief court reports, but are not required to attend court hearings.
CASMs:
- are willing to work with children who are often forgotten by others;
- can continue to work with a child until he or she is out of the system;
- enjoy mentoring young people;
- and make a commitment of 24 months, to see the case through.
