Makua began in 1953 as an auxiliary to benefit Children’s Home Society.  Miss Miriam Rappe, District Director for Children’s Home Society, asked six Point Loma women to form an auxiliary to raise critical funds to support the Society’s programs. After two planning meetings and the addition of eighteen friends, Makua’s first general meeting was held in April 1953.

The recently completed Kona Kai Club on Shelter Island was chosen as the location for Makua’s first annual benefit. The name Makua, which means “parent” in Hawaiian, was chosen to fit in with the tropical location and luau theme of that first fundraising event.

 Makua’s twenty-four Charter Members were:

Gladys Bridge
Delores Rice
Martha Caperton
Janet Moore
Muriel Rumsey
Ann Simonds
Ester Sutherland
Allene Lindsey

On September 10, 2003 , Makua voted to retire as an auxiliary of the Children’s Home Society and transfer its support to Voices for Children, effective December 31, 2003 .  In January 2004, Makua began its affiliation with Voices for Children.
