"We aspire to serve every child in need of advocacy and support and to further create accountability by monitoring, collecting data and reporting on every child within the San Diego foster care system."
Voices for Children (VFC) has experienced great success since its creation in 1980. With our current resources, we will serve 1,088 children with a CASA in the fiscal year 2009-10 and will provide case assessment and monitoring for every child in the foster care system. This is the good news.
The bad news is San Diego's foster youth are in crisis and the need for our help far outweighs our current resources:
- 140-160 children enter the foster care system each month
- On any given day, 5,000 children are dependents of the court
- Close to 40% of children in foster care are under the age of 5
- 40% of former foster youth nationwide end up homeless within one year of aging out of the foster care system
- Only 50% of foster youth in this country receive their high school diploma
- Former foster children studied recently in the Pacific Northwest had a higher rate of post-traumatic stress disorder than war veterans.
