Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to decide right now which volunteer position I want to perform?
Come to the next information session and get further acquainted with both the organization and the volunteer positions before making your choice.

Can I work full-time and still be a volunteer?
Yes.  More than half of our volunteers hold full-time jobs and still have time to be successful volunteers.

How much time does it take to be a volunteer?
Court Appointed Special Advocates and Monitors volunteer 10-15 hours each month.  Educational Surrogates volunteer 8-10 hours each month.  Case Assessors volunteer about once every two weeks (this varies).

What are the basic requirements for becoming a Voices for Children volunteer?
All volunteers must be at least 21 years of age and be able to relate to people of different cultural backgrounds.  Volunteers must be able to maintain objectivity and keep the confidentiality of the children, their families, and court records.

Those volunteers who are working directly with children must have effective oral and written communication skills and the willingness to drive to a variety of locations throughout San Diego County.  All volunteers must be able to clear a criminal record background check.

Where do the children live?
The children live in foster homes, group homes, and relatives’ homes throughout San Diego County.

Will the judge really listen to my opinion?
Yes, the judges understand that volunteers have more time to get to know the child and provide the most up to date and accurate information about the child.  This is invaluable to them in making the best possible decision for the child.
